Brian J Honan Retrofit Update

Time for a Brian J Honan #DeepEnergyRetrofit Update!

The project is rolling along smoothly, with interior work wrapping up on the 3rd of 9 buildings and exterior work already underway at the 4th (and largest) building in the project.

Executing a successful occupied #DeepEnergyRetrofit is no easy task, as it requires mastering a complex sequence of moving parts and considerations.

The team must carefully navigate the tailored sequencing of exterior demolition while keeping occupied buildings completely weathertight, maintaining clear occupant egress on an active construction site, and dealing with unexpected existing conditions and inconsistencies.

At the same time, the project demands constant engineering and logistical pivots, from modifying HVAC distribution methods based on refrigerant loads and spatial constraints to coordinating tight site footprints with solar equipment, heat pumps, and accessibility improvements. In addition, this Project includes coordinating building-to-building shared infrastructure like domestic hot water systems.  All this while managing vital everyday human concerns such as noise, comfort, and daily access for the occupants.

If there is one secret ingredient to pulling this off, it’s flexibility, in every sense of the word, from each team member. This type of work takes a diligent, constantly engaged team to execute successfully, and we are incredibly grateful to be a part of such an amazing group and thrilled to share positive progress on a truly deserving project.
