Swarthmore College Sustainability Symposium Open House

Sometimes the most interesting details are those that aren't necessarily meant to be showcased.

Last week Onion Flats Architecture had the privilege of attending the Green Building United sponsored Swarthmore College Sustainability Symposium Open House, and what struck us most wasn't what's visible above ground, it was what's hidden below it.

The subterranean campus-wide geothermal mechanical plant beneath Swarthmore's dining hall is a masterclass in care and craftsmanship. Every conduit run, every pipe, every connection reflects a standard of excellence that no one walking the surface will ever see, and that's exactly the point. This is what genuine institutional commitment looks like. The scale of investment being made for a campus of 1,600 students is remarkable, and the pride taken in the work is evident in every detail, seen and unseen.

Bravo to the Swarthmore College facilities and sustainability staff for building something truly worthy of their mission.
